The Scottsville Community Chamber of Commerce meeting room has been filling up with your donations!
Earlier this month, Scottsville Task Force 17 began collecting donations to transport to areas near Asheville, North Carolina, one of many areas devastatingly impacted by Hurricane Helene.
“It took off overnight,” said Captain Jack Maxwell, who organized the donation efforts. “This type of situation happened to us here in Scottsville back in 1968. This was 10 times worse than it was up here. If we were in that situation, they would probably do the same. We should help them out.”
Maxwell set up shop in the second floor meeting room and has been collecting everything from non-perishable food items and baby food to toiletries and feminine hygiene products to cleaning supplies. He said volunteers from North Carolina have requested medical supplies, pet supplies and outdoor tools, including rakes, shovels and tarps.
“The list has been changing constantly,” he said. “They’re trying to get ready for the cold. It’s getting to the season for holidays, and we just want to get them back to their normal and get them taking care of.”
Through the kindness of truck drivers traveling from Virginia Beach, New Jersey and New York, the volunteers have been able to transport the donations from Scottsville to North Carolina. Maxwell said they are using old buses that are in the process of being converted into tiny homes and currently empty. The last bus will leave this Saturday, October 19th. Donations can be taken to the meeting room from 9am-4pm daily.
