Due to poor air quality and reduced visibility caused by smoke from the Canadian wildfires, all Albemarle County swimming beaches are closed Friday, July 17, 2026. The closure is necessary to protect the health and safety of visitors and staff. Beaches will reopen at 10 am on Saturday, July 18.

The National Weather Service has issued a Code Red air quality alert for Albemarle County. Community members can protect themselves by limiting time outdoors, especially those in a sensitive group such as children, older adults, or those with heart disease, or other respiratory conditions. Stay hydrated, keep windows and doors closed, and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces.
