As summer begins to wind down, the first day of school will be here before we know it! Scottsville Elementary School students will head back to the classroom on Wednesday, August 12, and we’re wishing every student, teacher, staff member, and family a fantastic start to the new school year.

“We are bursting with excitement to welcome our wonderful families back,” said SES Principal Cyndi Wells. “This year, our theme is “We Grow,” and we can’t wait to watch our students flourish as Readers, Writers, Mathematicians, Thinkers, and Kind Humans. Every day will be a new opportunity to nurture their curiosity, build their skills, and practice empathy for one another and the world around us.”

Students and their families are invited to meet Wells and SES Assistant Principal Jae Ellegood while they enjoy popsicles and get to know one another before the new school year!

Whether you’re squeezing in one last family adventure or getting those backpacks ready, now is a great time to make sure you’re prepared for the year ahead. Be sure to check out important back-to-school information, including school supply lists, the school calendar, arrival and dismissal details, and other helpful resources. This year, school doors will open at 7:45am and students will be marked tardy at 7:55am. That is a change from past years to maximize every minute of the school day, according to Wells.

For families interested in attending the county’s Back to School Bash on August 9, a bus has been arranged for SES students to share! Meet at Yancey Community Center by 12:00pm to head to the event as a group. Enjoy these final days of summer, make some great memories, and here’s to a safe, successful, and exciting school year for the entire Scottsville Elementary community!

“Speaking of growing, we are thrilled to make full use of our amazing Community Garden, generously built by our fantastic PTO last year!” Wells added. “It’s going to be an incredible hands-on space for learning and exploration. To help us get the beds prepped and ready for fall planting, we could use a few extra hands to help weed and tidy up. If any families have a bit of time to spare, we’d love your help getting our garden in tip-top shape for the year ahead!”
