In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Scottsville Elementary School has proudly honored the rich histories, vibrant cultures and lasting contributions of Hispanic and Latino leaders. Throughout the month of September, students explored the inspiring lives and achievements of remarkable figures who have shaped our world across diverse fields, including civil rights icon Dolores Huerta for her tireless advocacy for farmworkers’ rights and social justice, soccer legend Lionel Messi for his unparalleled athletic excellence and global inspiration, author Pam Munoz Ryan for storytelling that brings Hispanic heritage to life for young readers, and award-winning creator Lin-Manuel Miranda for transforming American theater and music. Through special lessons, readings and activities, SES students have been able to gain a deeper appreciation for the traditions, stories and cultural richness that continue to strengthen our community.
In addition to these teacher-led lessons, one student took this cultural celebration a step further as she took the lead in designing and running a School Wide Morning Meeting on Puerto Rico. Her mother assisted her in the meeting.
“We are bursting with pride for our incredible 5th grader, Anna,” said Principal Cyndi Wells. “Her enthusiasm and genuine love for the project were absolutely contagious, inspiring everyone around her. She brought an authenticity to the event that set our school apart from any other. Watching her natural ability to lead, create and share with such passion was a joy, and we could not be prouder of her remarkable achievement!”
