During the September 16 meeting, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors proclaimed September 2026 as World Alzheimer’s Month and endorsed Albemarle County as a Dementia Friendly Community.
In Albemarle County, approximately 11.4% of residents age 65 or older are living with Alzheimer’s dementia. The proclamation recognizes the people living with dementia in our community and the caregivers who support them. It also encourages residents, businesses, health care providers, and community organizations to learn about dementia and help people living with it remain active, respected, and included.
Small actions can make a difference. Learning the signs of dementia, using clear and patient communication, supporting caregivers, and connecting people with services can help make our community more welcoming and accessible.
