Baked invites everyone to celebrate 5th anniversary

What began as a small home bakery fueled by a local resident’s passion for creativity and baking has now grown into one of Scottsville’s favorite sweet destinations and they are ready to celebrate with you!

In the spring of 2020, Brittiny Taylor started Baked on the James in her own kitchen, making tasty creations for family and friends. When it became clear that her venture had outgrown her home kitchen, Taylor took the leap and moved into the current storefront on Valley Street in summer 2021. Since then, Baked on the James has become known throughout the area for its homemade desserts, creative treats and warm hometown atmosphere and they are gearing up to celebrate their 5th anniversary with everyone this weekend!

In addition to a flower cupcake decorating class on Saturday, customers can also enjoy specials on whole Key Lime pies and Strawberry Crunch cheesecakes from July 30 through August 1. Limited-edition anniversary cupcake boxes are also available, with reservations for the class and specialty desserts available through the bakery’s website.

“We are grateful for five years and we couldn’t do it without the continued support and people choosing to support local,” said Taylor. “We are looking forward to Saturday! We will be offering lots of free samples and giveaways.”

Taylor started the local bakery with her sister, EmilyCobbs, and Emily’s fiance, Devonte Rush. The sisters remember sharing a love of cooking and baking from an early age which made the decision to start the bakery together an easy decision.

“I never envisioned myself in a bakery,” Rush said in a previous interview with Scottsville Monthly. “Everything happened so fast. Ever since then it’s been a blur. We stay busy all the time, but it doesn’t really feel like it’s work because it’s like family. We definitely put love and care into everything.”

The baking crew starts their days early, with baking beginning around 4am so they can be ready for customers by 10am when the store opens. With the kitchen setup, they average 32 dozen cupcakes an hour, Taylor said, and can sell anywhere from 40 to 100 dozen cupcakes depending on the day, with some days ending early because they have sold out entirely. In addition to cupcakes, the store also offers other pastries for purchase such as cheescakes, pies, cream puffs, lemon and brownie bars, cinnamon rolls and pup treats for your four-legged friends.

“It feels unreal sometimes that people love so much what we do,” Rush said. “We’re really thankful for everyone.”
