Batteaux festival kicks off, heading to Scottsville

The James River Batteau Festival kicks off today, launching an eight-day journey down the historic James River! The annual event features authentic replicas of the batteaux, sleek, shallow-draft merchant boats that once served as a vital link in Virginia’s early economy, transporting goods and connecting communities along the river.

Starting on the waterfront in Lynchburg, crews will travel a historic 200-year-old route, stopping in towns and communities along the way. Each evening brings celebrations of the region’s rich cultural heritage through music, storytelling, dancing, and the fellowship that has long been a hallmark of life along the James River. The festival offers a unique opportunity to experience Virginia history in motion, as participants and spectators alike follow the journey of these remarkable boats through some of the Commonwealth’s most scenic and historic river communities.

The batteaux are scheduled to arrive in Scottsville on Wednesday, where residents and visitors will have the chance to welcome the crews and enjoy one of the festival’s most anticipated stops along the river. Hosted at James River Reeling & Rafting’s river camp, the afternoon and evening will feature live music from Farm Use String Band and Valley Street Drifters, local food and beverage vendors and opportunities to connect with historians, living history interpreters and organizations dedicated to preserving the heritage of the James River. Arrival times may vary depending on river conditions. Community members and visitors are invited to enjoy this unique riverside gathering that honors Virginia’s transportation history and the enduring legacy of the James River.

The James River Batteau Festival was the starting point for a bigger dream for Will Smith and Will Cash. The two have been participating in the festival since they were kids and now work to share this important piece of Virginia history year-round. Inspired by the rich heritage of the batteaux and Scottsville’s historic connection to river commerce, the two college friends launched James River Batteau Company. The Scottsville business is dedicated to bringing the story of these iconic boats to residents and visitors beyond the festival itself. Read more about their company here.
