Albemarle County experienced a strong storm with high winds and hail that caused damage across the region. The Office of Emergency Management is assessing the damage across our community to give a better sense of any recovery efforts necessary. Every entry to the Storm Damage Report Form helps build a clearer picture of how Friday’s storm affected our community. If you experienced significant, non-emergency damage, please take a few minutes to share what you experienced through the Storm Damage Report Form.

Why Your Report Matters
Your report helps the Albemarle County Office of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service better understand the real impacts of Friday’s storm and compare what weather radar indicated with what actually happened on the ground. Reports from residents can help the National Weather Service verify severe weather warnings, improve how forecasters interpret radar during future storms and determine whether additional assessment of the storm is needed. Reports also become part of the National Weather Service’s official records of significant weather events.
What Should be Reported?
Information from across the storm’s path helps the County understand the extent of the impacts and provides valuable information to the National Weather Service about what occurred on the ground. Residents are encouraged to report damage such as:
- Large trees or limbs that are snapped, uprooted or significantly damaged
- Roof, siding, window, garage or other structural damage
- Vehicles damaged by hail, wind-blown debris or falling trees
- Hail approximately 1 inch or larger, including an estimate of the size when possible
- Flooding that enters a structure or covers a roadway, if it can be safely observed
- Power poles or utility lines that are down but are not creating an immediate emergency or blocking a roadway
- Significant damage to sheds, barns, fences, carports or other outbuildings

Do not use the Storm Damage Report Form if you are experiencing an emergency. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you encounter:
- A collapsed building or structure
- People trapped inside a building or vehicle
- A smell of natural gas or a burning odor
- A medical issue or life-threatening emergency
- Trees or utility lines down across roadways or vehicles
Do not approach downed power lines. Stay away and assume they are energized. For these situations, do not use the damage report form. Call 9-1-1.
Reporting Utility Issues
If you encounter a road hazard that needs immediate attention, please call VDOT at 1-800-367-7623 (FOR-ROAD) or visit my.vdot.virginia.gov. For the most up-to-date traffic and roadway information, visit www.511virginia.org. A current list of road closures can also be found on 511 Virginia’s Road Conditions Table.
If you are experiencing a power outage, report it directly to your electric utility provider. Reporting an outage helps the utility identify affected areas and coordinate restoration efforts.

Report outages online or call 1-800-956-4237.
Appalachian Power Outage Center
Stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines and do not touch the line or anything that may be in contact with it. Report outages directly to your electric utility provider. Situations like down live electrical wires are emergency incidents and need to be reported to 9-1-1.
