Scottsville library to share history of Yancey School

Celebrate Black History Month at the Scottsville Library this weekend!

Join the library for a history of the Yancey School in Esmont, presented by Ed Brooks, the Community Engagement Program Manager of what is now the BF Yancey School Community Center. He will talk about the opening of Yancey as a segregated school and its eventual desegregation, final closure and then re-opening as a successful community center.

Mr. Brooks will detail the opening of Yancey School for Black students in 1960, one of several segregated schools in the area, including Burley High School in Charlottesville. He will discuss the wider history of these schools as well as the specific circumstances and history of Yancey. Discussion and questions will follow, and light refreshments will be available.  Recommended for ages 14+.
